Membership FAQs

1. Aren't you looking for donors who can underwrite a program or make a major donation? Will my "Hardy Friend" membership be of any value?
Yes, large donations are always welcome! AND yes, yes, yes: every donation, large or small, helps us accomplish our mission. If ten community members join the Hardy Society at the Friend level, we can provide a stipend to a local artist to offer ten hours of mentoring to ten or more students. A win-win situation all-round: artists receive compensation and youth receive inspiration and instruction.

2. Isn't the Francis Hardy Gallery just that—a gallery?
The outstanding exhibitions at the Hardy Gallery on the Anderson Dock in Ephraim are certainly our flagship programs. Three times each season, we install exhibits that are visited by an average of 10,000 guests annually in what may be the most beautiful gallery venue in the state of Wisconsin. Saunter onto the dock, lulled by the waves of Green Bay and the bobbing of boats in the water; look east, to the view of historic Ephraim; look west, the pristine, unmarred shores of Peninsula State Park. Inside the gallery, yet more beauty in the art of acclaimed professionals and new, emerging artists.

Beyond the gallery, in the Ephraim offices of the FHCA, you will find volunteers and members meeting with the executive staff to plan free arts programs that will enrich the lives of the youth and adults in Door County and beyond the peninsula. The Exposure to Creativity program, in partnership with Gibraltar High School and Friends of Gibraltar, brings hands-on art and mentor experiences to local youth while the Summer Youth Migrant Program weaves together art and academics for the benefit of migrant children. The adult Enrichment Series provides opportunities to expand horizons for local citizens. Our public events, the Door County Festival of Arts and the Art Studio Tour, connect thousands of people to the arts in our community.

3. Why not just do one thing and do it well—stick to exhibiting art and let schools worry about art education?
We can't and we won't do everything. We can't take care of health care, but we can serve our mental health needs by sponsoring exceptional exhibits and offering enriching art activities. We can't teach reading and math, but we can enhance their instruction by integrating art activities. We can't eliminate violence or war but we can help people learn to be creative, in their personal lives and as community problem-solvers.

Finally we promise to continually evaluate our strategic plan, stay on task with our mission, and responsibly use the funds entrusted to us by our community through memberships and donations.
