Carol Schalla retired to Door County almost 8 years ago, after a long full-time career as the Home Editor for such shelter publications as Romantic Homes, Country Home and Midwest Living. With the gift of more time, she re-ignited her passion for pastel painting. Early on, while raising her family, she received accolades and commissions for pastel portrait work and has always had a sketchbook in hand. Self-taught for the most part, she has augmented her skills and growth with classes from such established pastel artists as Tom Christopher, Carol Stock Wasson, Christine Debrosky, Colette Odya Smith, and Marla Bagatta.
Carol finds unending inspiration in Door County’s shorelines and pastoral back roads, challenging her to step away from the realism of past portrait work into a slightly impressionistic representational interpretation of the landscapes and rural subjects that surround her. Carol has been honored to have been juried into several Hardy gallery shows and has her art exhibited frequently in different venues around the Door peninsula.
